The variation piece for bassoon and piano was composed as a compulsory piece for the summer 2011 Crusell week bassoon competition. The composition consists of four different variations, each of which has a different type of challenge for the musicians.

The first part is fast and virtuosic. It presents a simple four-note theme from different perspectives. The second variation begins calmly and meditatively, but becomes more frantic and finally ends up introducing the theme with the help of multiphones as well.

The third variation begins with a bassoon monologue and themes that were already heard in the first movement. The drama is brought in by a few tannings of the bassoon.

In the last variation, the theme can be heard in the low register of the piano, with the bassoon’s atmosphere and descent towards the last notes.
