Rydman wrote his sixth string quartet at a crossroads in his life and weaved in echoes from the past.
1. Moderato
The first movement is based on a continuous, diatonic and constantly changing melody played by one or two voices. The music is static and meditative.
2. Vivace
The composer’s dissatisfaction with the second movement left it incomplete until 2015 when it was entirely rewritten based on the original theme. The dance-like sections refer to youth and the use of quarter tones creates dream-like nuances here and there.
3. Andante mistico e sostenuto
The theme of the classical slow movement is a variation of the melody of the slow movement of Sonata I (op.14, 1962), the composer’s first internationally acclaimed piece. The theme with its quarter tones is heard as an echo in the latter part of the movement. The music disappears like soap bubbles, as in the other movements.
4. Fuga (Allegretto)
The finale is a modest, lyrical fugue in A minor with multiple themes. The music was originally written
