Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (4 January 1710 Jesi – 16 March 1736 Pozzuoli) was an Italian composer, violinist and organist.
At first he studied music under Francesco Santini. In 1725, Pergolesi and his family moved to Naples. Here he studied under Gaetano Greco, among others. Pergoles later became one of the most respected composers of opera buffa (comic opera). The opera La Serva padrona, composed in 1733, is today Pergoles’ best-known work. In addition to operas, Pergolesi composed, among other things, church music.
