Markku Lautjärvi, the leading cantor of the Turku Catherine’s Church, was born in 1957 in Tampere. He studied to be a cantor organist in Kuopio in 1982. In addition to his degree as a singing teacher at the Sibelius Academy, he received a singing diploma and a general department diploma in the spring of 1985, after which he worked as a singing class teacher at the Sibelius Academy Kuopio for two years. Lautjärvi is a German-style lyrical tenor. In addition to numerous oratorio and passion soloist duties, he has performed about a dozen roles as a soloist in our provincial operas in Kuopio, Mikkeli and Turku. In 2014, Lautjärvi recorded Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die Schöne Müller’s with guitarist Patrik Kleemola.

Markku Lautjärvi’s compositional work has been limited, mainly with user music related to the cantor’s work, including opening and closing plays related to hymns. He has been the cantor of St. Catherine’s Church in Turku since 1987. In 2000, he was awarded the Director cantus title.
