Timo-Juhani Kyllönen has had a highly international career, having lived for extended periods in Sweden and Russia, the latter being where he was trained as a composer. Latin America also has a conspicuous presence in his music. “In trying, through his music, to liberate his listeners from their negative feelings and to bring out the positive energy in them, Kyllönen’s works are, on an abstract level, a statement on the eternal battle between good and evil in the world,” writes Kalevi Aho. The majority of Kyllönen’s output comprises chamber music and vocal music (including a substantial number of pieces for children’s choir), but it also includes several symphonies and operas as well as a concerto for his own instrument, the accordion.
