Johan Emil Kauppi (until 1906 Kaupelin; 28. 28 October 1875 Uusikaupunki – lokakuu 1930) was a Finnish composer, pianist and kantele player.
He studied piano and organ in Kangasala and continued his studies at the Turku Cantor Organ School and from 1895 to 1897 at the Helsinki Music Institute. Kauppi studied briefly with Martin Wegelius and Jean Sibelius, among others, and gave composition concerts in Helsinki in 1915 and 1923. In addition to Helsinki, he worked as a theatre and film conductor in Tampere and Vyborg, and for several years was the secretary of the Finnish Workers’ Music Union.
Kauppi’s most significant works as a composer were in opera music. His compositional output includes two operas (Päiväkummun pidot [The Feast of the Mountain Peak], based on the text by Henrik Ibsen, 1925, and Nummisuutarit [The Shoemakers], based on the text by Aleksis Kivi, 1930), six operettas, music for plays (including the song play On the Deck of the Ship, based on the text by Pasi Jääskeläinen, 1916), 50 solo songs (most of which have been published), 20 choral works, ten piano works, and some chamber music works.
