Christian Holmqvist (b. 1974 in Helsinki) studied composition privately under the guidance of Lars Karlsson 1992-1996 and musicology, philosophy and literature at the University of Helsinki 1993-2002. Holmqvist’s output includes orchestral-, chamber-, instrumental and vocal music. His first orchestral work, Purgatory Triptych, was awarded with the main prize in the Kuopio Composition Contest in 1999. In 2003 Holmqvist enjoyed a new success in the same competition, when his first String Quartet was awarded with a first prize in the chamber music category and Sherlock’s Violin was awarded with the first prize in the solo violin music category.

His music has been performed by renowned Finnish musicians and ensembles, such as the saxophonist Olli-Pekka Tuomisalo, the pianist Risto-Matti Marin and the chamber orchestra Avanti!. Holmqvist works as a translator and a writer. He lives in Helsinki.
